From Roman times to the Middle Ages
Belluno's history dates back to the Roman era. The town's strategic location made it an important military outpost and trading hub. During the Middle Ages, Belluno flourished as a part of the Republic of Venice. Many of the town's stunning architectural landmarks, including its impressive fortifications, date back to this period.
Dolomites warfare
Between 1915 and 1917 in particular, the Belluno Dolomites were the scene of fierce battles during the First World War. Trenches, war trails, tunnels and fortifications along numerous hiking routes in the Belluno section of the Via Alpina, the so-called ‘Dolomites Front’ between Alto Agordino and Valle d'Ampezzo, still bear witness to one of the most terrible wars in history.
Modern day Belluno
Today, Belluno seamlessly blends historical charm with modern amenities. This thriving town offers cultural attractions like museums and theatres, shops and restaurants, and easy access to outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and skiing in the nearby Dolomites. With its welcoming atmosphere and excellent transport links to Venice in the south, for instance, Belluno provides a delightful and convenient destination for visitors year-round.
