Overview and historical significance
Lago di Landro, also known as Dürrensee, is a serene alpine lake situated at 1,400 metres above sea level in the heart of the Dolomiti di Sesto Nature Park, South Tyrol. This enchanting lake is nestled between the peaks of Monte Cristallo and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, making it a breathtaking destination for nature lovers. The lake’s crystal-clear waters, fed by mountain streams, reflect the surrounding mountains.
Lago di Landro is not only a natural marvel but also a site of historical importance. The region bears the marks of World War I, where it served as a strategic location along the Dolomite front. Remnants of fortifications and war memorials can still be found around the lake, offering a glimpse into the past. One notable site is the Cemetery of the Austro-Hungarian soldiers, a solemn reminder of the area's turbulent history.
